Tiffany Jackson, ND, is the owner of EcoHealth Wellness Center & Detox Spa in Charleston, South Carolina and creator of Natural Medicine Now – an online course that helps her patients to get the knowledge they need to live a healthy lifestyle.

Tiffany is an expert in natural medicine. Her main goal is to identify the imbalances in the body and the diseases they may contribute to. She trained for two years under various experts in the field. With Dr. Allan Lieberman at the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, she learned how nutrition and toxins from our environment affect our bodies.

For three years, Tiffany worked as a clinical consultant under Dr. William Shaw at Great Plains Laboratory in Kansas City, where she learned how to interpret comprehensive results from lab testings.

Tiffany believes that the cornerstone of healthy life is proper nutrition. Her advice on nutrition has been featured on multiple platforms, including Shape Magazine, MindBodyGreen or local news stations. Tiffany is also a host of Natural Medicine Now Podcast.

Tiffany sees herself as a health detective. She specializes in identifying and healing of chronic gastrointestinal and immune disorders.

Her patients are most commonly treated for irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation, different kinds of allergies, skin disorders (e.g. acne, psoriasis, eczema), anxiety and depression or even infertility.

She also helps patients to improve their overall health and learn how to detoxify with her 14-day nutritional program EcoCleanse Detox program.

Tiffany was so kind to do an interview with me via email about her experience with infrared saunas.

Tiffany, you have a doctorate in naturopathic medicine. What exactly is naturopathic medicine and what lead you to study in this interesting field?

As a competitive high school athlete, I was always interested in health and exercise. I attended University of Massachusetts and took a holistic health course and began to learn more about natural therapies. In one of my classes, a naturopathic doctor was a guest speaker which introduced me to the profession.

Naturopathic Medicine is a form of primary care, in which medically trained physicians specialize in the treatment of disease using holistic and mostly natural methods.

Naturopathic physicians are trained to diagnose patients in a similar way as medical doctors are taught, using lab work, physical exam and subjective symptoms as tools to understand an individual’s health concerns.

Rather than focusing on symptom reduction, using mostly pharmaceutical drugs or surgery, naturopathic doctors consider the importance of one’s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being in the development of a disease.

Naturopaths seek to understand the root of the problem and aid the body in its ability to return to a healthier state of being.

Techniques are focused on natural methods that stimulate the body’s systems and on eliminating lifestyle factors that might be contributing to the development of symptoms.

Can infrared saunas be considered part of naturopathic medicine?

Yes and no. It is not considered a naturopathic medicine modality. However, infrared sauna therapy is used by many naturopathic doctors to help aid in detoxification.

You offer infrared sauna services in your wellness center and you seem to know quite a lot about them. How did you discover this kind of spa treatment?

As a naturopathic doctor, I became very interested in environmental medicine. My mentors included Dr. Walter Crinnon, Dr. Alan Lieberman and Dr. William Shaw, who are highly respected in the field of environmental medicine. All three taught me how to use infrared therapy to heal my patients especially with chronic disease and mold toxicity.

Infrared saunas seem to be a big boom recently. Are there many people interested in this kind of treatment in your wellness center?

At EcoHealth Wellness Center & Detox Spa, we teach people that the healing comes from within. That we need to look beyond the symptoms you are experiencing and find the root cause of your disease.

Your body is an ecosystem… an intricate, interconnected balance of trillions of microorganisms of thousands of different species such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.

Your body is an ecosystem.
An intricate, interconnected balance of trillions of microorganisms of thousands of different species such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.

There are many possible causes in our modern world – excessive stress, nutritional deficiencies, laptops and smartphones, fast food, pollution, medications…

Once people understand why they are sick and how infrared sauna therapy can help them, then they are interested in using it.

What do you think caused the popularity of infrared saunas?

I believe people are becoming more health conscience and have a lot more accessibility to natural therapies with the internet and social media. There are big companies that do a ton of marketing around infrared sauna therapies.

I educate my patients that many of the big companies are not always the best. My favorite company is Vital Health Saunas (if you mention EcoHealth you will receive a family discount).

What do you consider the biggest benefits of infrared saunas?

Far infrared waves penetrate deep into your body which then activates the sweat glands. Sweat is a great  mechanism of our body to get rid of the toxins. Since the skin is the largest organ in the human body it is a very good means for elimination of toxins.

When you sit in an infrared sauna, there are infrared heaters that warm the body in the same manner as natural sunlight. The infrared rays also vitalize your cells and your metabolism.

When far infrared waves are applied to water molecules on your skin, the water molecules begin to vibrate.

The vibration reduces the ion bonds and the eventual breakdown of the water molecules causes encapsulated gases and other toxic metals to be released.

Not only do people get full body detoxification benefits from being in an infrared sauna, but they also feel energetically rejuvenated and balanced from being in contact with the infrared waves.

Far infrared heat provides all the healthy benefits of natural sunlight without any of the dangerous effects of solar radiation. These infrared waves have the potential to penetrate 1.5 to 2 inches into the body, and raising your core body temperature from deep inside. Basically you are self-inducing a fever, which in turn can kill off these unwanted pathogens in your system.

Not only do people get full body detoxification benefits from being in an infrared sauna, but they also feel energetically rejuvenated and balanced from being in contact with the infrared waves. At EcoHealth Wellness Center and Detox Spa, we have two saunas on site to help with patients and their detoxification programs.

Do you have a positive personal experience with an infrared sauna? Have you experienced some of its benefits on yourself?

I have personally experienced the benefits of infrared sauna therapy myself. I use it regularly to get the detoxification benefits along with encouraging relaxation time, and I believe it helps with maintaining a healthy weight and a glowing skin complexion.

What tip or recommendation would you give to somebody who wants to try an infrared sauna?

The best tip I can give someone who wants to try an infrared sauna is to know where the sauna came from. Make sure it is made with hypoallergenic wood and without toxic glue. Also, it is important to make sure it has a low EMF (electromagnetic field).
